Nokia 3711 – Bad external display

Mid Range PhonesOn July 28, 2010 at 10:52 am

It is a surprise that Nokia doesn’t get a lot of phones here in the US; it is a big name in the Asian and European markets. The latest product that I got from this manufacturer was the Nokia 3711 and there is nothing exciting for a tech enthusiast like me; it is a mid range handset. This phone is from T-Mobile and it is made basically for calling. There are some extras thrown in though. The call quality is really good and so is the photo quality. I had just one complaint about the build quality; the clamshell design of the phone feels a bit flimsy and the external display doesn’t show much details. This gadget will cost you $69 with an Even More Service agreement and without it, the cost is $159.

Nokia 3711 continues the design trend that was first started by Nokia 2605, 2705 and 7205. The lid opens up to form a smooth curve and it gently cradles on the head. The thin profile makes it easy to put the phone tightest of jeans. Also noteworthy is that the handset doesn’t lie flat on a table when you open it. It spins like a top.

The Nokia 3711 3.5 x 1.85 x 0.59 inches and at 3.31 ounces, it is relatively lighter than other mid range phones I have tested in my labs. The hinge is quite sturdy and it gave me a wispy feeling in the hand. The build quality is better than both 2705 and 2605, it feels sturdier than those phones but it certainly won’t survive a bang on the floor. The battery cover is ribbed and I liked it. There is an option of brown (or sable, as Nokia calls is) color scheme for the phone. The manufacturer says that this handset is made from eight percent recycled plastic.

Most of the Nokia 3711’s front is made of plastic. The external display disappears when you turn off the backlighting. This is not an issue for me, the screen shows just the time in big numbers. I was a bit disappointed by this as other external displays usually show date, signal strength, and battery life. The external display shows you the numeric called ID but there is no photo caller ID support.

On the exterior of Nokia 3711, there is a 2.5 mm headphones jack and a volume rocker. On the right, there is the card slot which also takes the charger and USB cord. On the back, there is a camera lens and I would recommend you to watch your fingers because I got mine in the way while clicking.

The display is 2.2 inches and it supports 16.7 millions colors. You get a 320×240 pixels resolution for the screen. The display is vibrant and bright, the colors look bold and the graphics too are sharp. The menu of this phone is very easy to use but this was expected since this is a mid range phone. I would have liked to see some design options too.
